Good, Free Perl CGI ScriptsBy Will Bontrager Most readers of this blog likely know we make several high quality Perl CGI scripts free for the downloading. The free stuff is for those who don't have the cash and still need the functionality. It's intended to help folks get a leg up and get started with their dream. The idea is that they might buy from us later when they're in better financial position and have need for additional features. They're already familiar with our quality, so why not? But, you know, a few people see value only in free not the item itself, but the fact that it was free. It's the darnedest thing. They'll never buy, from us or anyone else, so long as they have a whiff that it or "something just as good" might be obtained for free. I don't mind, really, it's just something I've gradually become aware of over the years of interacting with people. They will buy documents and memberships focused on getting things for free, and they will spend $10 fuel driving somewhere to pick up a free item when they could have purchased something similar and even better quality close to home for a few dollars. It's the darnedest thing. I once overheard part of a conversation as I walked by an entrepreneurial stand in an RV park where some fellow was carving names on wooden boards with a router (the woodworking tool, not the Internet tool). The boards were intended to be signs displayed somewhere on the outside of an RV so folks can see who lives there. It seems the wife wanted one, 'cause I heard the husband say, "I've got some scrap wood in the back yard I can make one for free." (I had a vision of what the back yard might look like.) Then I heard the wife say, "But will you?" And you know what? On the outside of the stand, just above head level, hung a wooden board carved with the words, "But will you?" I laughed out loud, a deep roaring belly laugh. It was really funny! Folks stared at me. Maybe I'm just easily amused :) August 11, 2005 Please note: Articles on this website are presented "as is".
