Content Block Spacing TrickBy Will Bontrager The default leading, which is the spacing between lines of text, is determined by the browser. (The term "leading" comes to us from the era of hot type. Text characters were made of lead, and each character was set by hand into a frame that would later be used to print a page. A strip of lead was inserted between lines of text to space the lines a bit and make it more readable once it's printed. The thickness of that strip of lead, the amount of space it forced between the lines of text, was referred to as the leading. It means "the spacing between lines.") Spacing between lines/blocks of text when the break tag is used (or table or div tags) is equal to the amount of leading of the default text; which is to say, spacing similar to lines that wrap within paragraphs. An easy way to adjust the spacing between blocks of text or other content is by inserting a div that uses an exact font size and line hight. Here is an example: The above inserts 5 pixels of space. The font-size is 1 pixel. The line-height is 5 pixels. To adjust the amount of spacing, adjust the line-height. If the above is used to adjust spacing between lines of text, remove any break tag at the end of the preceding line of text.
