Sandbox Testing of .htaccess File ChangesBy Will Bontrager Test .htaccess file changes in an otherwise unused subdirectory before putting it live in the document root. Because .htaccess files have an effect only in the directory where the file resides and its subdirectories, testing in a special test subdirectory will be an effective sandbox. If you goof with the .htaccess file, it only has an effect on the test directory and subdirectories, not your entire site. Yours truly learned this lesson some time ago when he caused an entire domain to spawn an Internal Server Error, no matter what page was loaded into the browser even regular web pages. Luckily, I had a backup of the previous .htaccess file version and quickly replaced the broken one. After I got my equilibrium back and blood pressure down, I found the problem and, yes, tested the fix in a sandbox directory. Note: If redirects or other commands launch other scripts or software, then those might have a negative impact. So test those beforehand.
