Screen Reader-Friendly Tab Panel GeneratorBy Will Bontrager The tab panel generator has not been as popular as we thought it might be. Even with its ease of use and the sweet, elegant, professional ways content can be presented. Some people assume or fear search engines can not or will not index content not immediately visible when a page loads or that there is some kind of penalty involved. The only authoritative pages on that subject we found on the Internet and in Google guidelines have to do with keyword stuffing within hidden text, surreptitious linking schemes, making content available to non-JavaScript browsers, and making content available to screen readers. The first two, well, just don't do it. Intentional spamming is not a mark of a highly-evolved human being. The last two have been addressed in the generator itself. At the "generate" submit button is a checkbox. Checking that will cause the generator to create code to make all tab and panel content visible to non-JavaScript browsers and available to screen readers. When it's checked, the generated code has no display or visibility CSS properties defined in the HTML or in the CSS. All of the tab panel functionality is taken care of in the JavaScript itself and then only with JavaScript-enabled browsers.
