Sweet ZipperBy Will Bontrager (Editor's note: Sweet Zipper is no longer available in the VCC area.) Sweet Zipper is here. Well, not here, but in the Valued Customer Club area. The VCC newsletter went out a few days ago. If you're a member of the club and didn't receive the email, filtered or inadvertently deleted or for whatever reason, log in and get this sweet CGI software. Not only is it a sweet zipper, it's also free for VCC members. Members are still entitled to the monthly 25$ coupon and other perks. So what is this Sweet Zipper thing, you ask? It zips up your site, whole directories at a gulp. When you zip up a directory, all subdirectories get zipped up, too. Thus, you could zip up your entire site with the click of a button. And it's fast. If you ever need to restore your site, put the zipped file into the directory where Sweet Zipper created it, and Sweet (Un)Zipper it. Restoration is fast, too. It restores only missing files. So if a file becomes corrupted, remove it from the server and run Sweet (Un)Zipper to restore the latest backed up version. Use Sweet Zipper regularly. Download the zipped files for backups. Then, when (not if) something happens to some files on your server, you'll have a backup. I wish I had had this when we moved our sites to the new server. It would have been so much easier and faster — zip up a directory, move it to the new server, and unzip it. It even restores file permissions! NOTE: Sweet Zipper is available only for VCC members.
