Because of a One-Dollar CableBy Will Bontrager Saturday evening we had Internet. Sunday morning, we didn't. Tech support informed us that Hughes has issues with the transponders of three satellites one of which provides our Internet connection. About mid-day on Monday, Hughes had resolved their issues. But we still had no Internet. Tech support, Will's on the phone again. It can be a tough job for tech support, troubleshooting sophisticated equipment via the telephone, with your only eyes being those of the operator. I'm no technician, but I can take directions and report results. Tech support concluded there is an equipment failure of some kind. They thought it likely that one of the connecting wires is failing, but it could be one of the electronic units, instead. A qualified technician will need to do have a look and determine the reason for the failure. Okay, here we are, at an RV park in the armpit of America (yes, really, see this Washington Post article), Battle Mountain, Nevada. Qualified technicians that know the Motosat system don't hang around street corners with "need work" signs. We must find a Motosat installer. And quickly. We have a business to run, and that business is run on the Internet. The two closest installers are both in the Las Vegas area, 420mi/675km south of us, in the general direction we were wanting to travel. It would be a two-day drive, traveling from the armpit of America to the gambling capital of America in two stages. Alternatively, we could travel to Salt Lake City, the factory headquarters of the Motosat system itself. It was only 250mi/400km from our location, directly west of us. We could make it in a day. (Did you know there is a Salt Pond near the Great Salt Lake?) Although it was a detour from our intended southerly direction, we decided to gain the day and travel to Salt Lake City. Tonight we have Internet! It was a short cable, something the technician thought would probably be priced at about a dollar in a parts store. Oh my. At least it wasn't a failure of expensive equipment. Those of you who missed the regular arrival of the Possibilities ezine, it should be on its way tomorrow night or Wednesday morning (USA time). An article I was doing to show web site owners how to test their forms for hijacking vulnerability was put on hold because, yes, I needed the Internet to test some things before writing the instructions. So I'll use tomorrow to do the tests and finish the article. October 4, 2005 Please note: Articles on this website are presented "as is".
