How To Increase Sales At No CostBy Will Bontrager A paper book of the same title was sent to me by the author, Robert D. Clarke. Earlier, I had read the "How Not To Ask" chapter he makes available free at his web site and we emailed back and forth a few times. His business is teaching and coaching word-of-mouth advertising techniques. And our business was started with a "recommend this web site" software program. So we have at least a small amount in common. The evening of the day the book arrived, I read it front to back. (Reading a book is one of my favorite ways of relaxing before retiring in the evening.) When it was finished, I turned to Mari and said, "You know, this is a good book." How To Increase Sales At No Cost relates to off-line marketing. Even so, many of its ideas can be applied on-line. For example, the trust factor mentioned in the book can be applied quite readily the idea that people trust individuals and businesses before they recommend them. An early numerology web site of ours went from less than 100 to over 2,000 page views per day in 9 months, with a "recommend this web site" form being our only active promotional activity during that period. The recommend form was used many times a day. Nowadays, the recommend form is used only several times a week. The difference, I believe, is trust. People have learned that some web sites will abuse their friends' email addresses. Although we never have and never will do anything so despicable, our site users don't know that. The job is to establish trust. If it's successful, I'm sure the number of recommendations will increase. How To Increase Sales At No Cost can be found at the Word-of-Mouth Ideas web site. (I like how the spiral binding of the book lets it lie flat. While writing this blog post, I got a phone call; and the book stayed open at my page.) It is less than 100 pages, yet is packed with useful ideas. You won't spend a lot of time reading fluff. January 25, 2006 Please note: Articles on this website are presented "as is".
