Two More Bookmarking Strategies
After the last issue of Possibilites ezine was published, I received this letter from Ken Hablow. His ideas are so useful that I'm publishing (with permission) his letter below.
Mari,
I enjoy reading your Work Smart articles. The last one prompted me to respond with 2 other suggestions.
The way I handle bookmarks is to drag the browser icon in the upper left to the desktop or into a folder on the desktop. Rename to something memorable.
Sites I use constantly have the shortcuts on my desktop. My key areas are the top row, bottom row and left row. I have 6 columns of 13 rows.
Client sites I go to several times a day are in the bottom row.
Links to sites and programs I use while working are in the left column.
Other working links are across the top.
One I use constantly is Will's Text to HTML CGI script which I have installed on my web site. This link is very accessible.
Then I have folders (directories). One has links to all my clients sites. For sites that have several CGI programs installed with control panels, I use a sub-folder within the main client folder. I keep a folder for reference sites, one for programming sites and one for sample sites I like.
~~~
A different system keeps track of all client information for each site. This zip file contains a JS and a sample HTML page.
On my system the shortcut link to this file is in the lower left of my screen. This allows me to have instant access to any information I need for any client. [Note: These files are kept on the office computer rather than the server, for security.]
Besides the basic web server information, I keep domain registration, passwords to various CGI control panels, login for a bulk email provider, PayPal information and anything else pertinent.
The DIV that displays on the page initially is all my personal stuff and the one marked Comcast is my Comcast information.
Regards,
Ken Hablow
Thank you, Ken, for
two highly useful ideas for "Working Smart". I know I will be implementing the layered HTML page idea!
