Aliases and Campaigns

An alias is a code at the end of a shortened URL that the software uses to determine the final destination for the browser.

Example:

http://example.com/go/ALIAS

Aliases may be composed of these characters: numbers, letters (upper- and lower-case), and characters ^ $ ! * ( )

Aliases are case-insensitive. "Alias" is treated the same as "alias".

When an alias is needed to serve in several campaigns, a campaign code can be used.

As examples, a unique campaign code may be used in links in an email, ads at a specific web site, or ads by an affiliate or group of affiliates.

No matter what campaign codes are used, the redirect URL will be the same as if no campaign code was used. They all get redirected to the same place.

An advantage of using campaign codes is for statistics. Campaign code click numbers and traffic sources are presented separately.

Campaign codes are appended to the alias of a shortened URL. Append a hyphen or underscore character followed by the campaign code.

Example:

http://example.com/go/ALIAS_CODE

Campaign codes may be composed of any characters an alias may be composed of, plus hyphens and underscore characters. These are all valid campaign code characters: numbers, letters (upper- and lower-case), and characters ^ $ ! * ( ) - _

A campaign code can be appended to an alias whenever one is needed. Nothing needs to be done with the control panel. Just append the campaign code to the shortened URL and you're good to go. Short URL V3 will record the campaign code when it receives a click from it.

An alias may be up to 32 characters long and a campaign code may be up to 32 characters long.

All of the following are valid campaign codes appended to an alias:

books!-email_blast
books!-web_site_(main)-ads
books!-web_site_(hobby)-ads
books!_AdWords

If the campaign code itself contains hyphens or underscores, the campaign code begins immediate after the first hyphen or underscore. Thus, "books!-web_site_(main)-ads" represents an alias "books!" and a campaign code "web_site_(main)-ads"

Aliases with campaign codes redirect to the URL specified in the record for that alias.

The Statistics/Export menu item provides numbers and graphs for (1) the alias total and (2) individual campaign codes.
